Thanksgiving, D.C., and Family

The past week has been a whirlwind of activities! On Thanksgiving Day, we had a worship service in the morning and then off to dinner at Emily's about an hour and a half away. I was very thankful to be able to get off campus and spend the day with Emily's family and I admit to being extremely thankful for the amazing meal her mother, sister, and grandmothers prepared for us. The next morning Emily, Kristen, and I got up at 4:00 AM to hit the big sale at Best Buy. I saved $90 on a thumb drive for storing pictures.

At 8:00 AM we left for D.C. We spent the day walking around the city in small groups to find, observe, and talk to internationals. Carl and Kay Garvin (a couple headed to Tanzania to do student ministry), Emily, and I walked around a neighborhood called Adams-Morgan where many Africans live. We met a restaurant owner and talked to him about what we will be doing in Africa. Then we headed over to 7th street to eat lunch at a small restaurant called Sumah's. For details on what we ate and pictures scroll down (after you finish reading)! At Sumah's we met several Africans and they were very interested to hear that we were headed to Africa to do ministry. Then we metro'ed over to the Vietnam Memorial and did some prayerwalking before heading back to Union Station to meet the buses. It was a fun, but tiring day.

On Saturday, Ex-Team held some classes: chicken-killing, basic sewing, bread making, and stick shift driving. I took the basic sewing and bread making classes while Emily took pictures of chickens with their heads cut (or wrung) off! An exciting morning to say the least. After lunch, my family (grandparents, brother, sister-in-law, and cousin) came to visit. We went out for dinner and then they came back to campus for the worship service. The service was really amazing and meaningful - it really made me think. Melissa stayed with me Saturday night and it was fun just hanging out. Sunday morning Russ and Kelly Sue came to worship with my small group while Papa and Grandma and Melissa went to Alan and Jane's small group. I think they all really enjoyed our small group worship. Then we went to lunch and unfortunately they had to leave. The long weekend was a blur of fun and busy-ness!

This week is regional time, so we're meeting daily with our Richmond Associates to discuss issues that relate directly to our region. I am so excited to soak up specific information! See below for pictures of us making a traditional African meal at Bob and Linda Allen's home (our Richmond Associates).
